CHAPTER NINE

“YOU SEEM DISTRACTED.” AMANDA PAUSED on the sidewalk leading to the recreational center where the Halloween fundraising event was being held. Music flowed from the open doors and onto the street, while a number of people hovered around the front entrance. The sun had fallen, and orange and purple miniature lights glittered in the trees, while several carved pumpkins illuminated the walkway up from the sidewalk.

“Work hasn’t been the best this week,” Kyle admitted. She didn’t know anything about Jenna, the hit-and-run, being relieved of duty, and he planned on keeping it that way. Sleeping with Jenna had magnified just how tepid his relationship was with Amanda. He’d promised to go with her tonight, and he wasn’t the type to back out on his word. But later in the week, he planned on severing ties finally. It wasn’t fair to Amanda or himself. Life was short enough. Amanda didn’t need to be wasting her time on him when she could find someone who really loved her.

“Sorry.” Amanda reached over and squeezed his hand. “I haven’t had the best one yet myself, and it’s only Monday. Pepperoni is turning out to be a handful.”

“Puppies take a lot of time to train.” He wondered if Jenna was going to be here tonight.

“Well, he chewed a corner of my ottoman.”

“Maybe if you get him some chew toys, it’ll help him from teething on your furniture.” He missed Jenna like hell. He’d almost caved a half-dozen times and called her, but the look on her face when he’d left her home had stopped him.

“It wasn’t just the ottoman. He got a hold of three pairs of my shoes. I thought I’d hidden them all from him.”

“I’m sure the store has some good repellant you could use to stop him from trying that again.” He was really worried about Jenna. He’d nagged Jeff for any information on the case, but prying his lips apart with a crowbar would have been easier. A number of times he’d driven by Jenna’s house and checked out the area. She liked to jog, and he hated the idea she might be out there running and vulnerable.

“Kyle!”

He blinked. Then he realized Amanda was frowning up at him. “What?”

“You’re not listening.”

“The job,” he lied.

“Well, focus.” She pulled on his hand and urged him toward the main entrance.

They stepped into a crush of people after surrendering their pre-purchased tickets. Clowns, nurses, cops, former Presidents, and a good dozen or so horror movie characters mingled with others more costume channeled, who’d opted for plain clothes like himself. He’d never been one for costumes. Amanda had been ticked because she’d wanted him to match her with her Raggedy Ann costume. Like hell he’d dress like Raggedy Andy. If someone caught him from the department, he’d hear about it for years if not decades.

He glanced around the crowd and frowned when he didn’t see Jenna. It was just as well. When a waitress/volunteer strolled by with a tray, he snagged a beer and a glass of wine for Amanda with two drink tickets.
